How much does it cost to have a car imported from japan to the U.S.?

Question:

i want to buy a Nissan Skyline from jaon but i want to know how much shipping it over here will coast can anyone help me? nd it would be better if you can just give me a plain number or an estimate. i know it has to do with wight imma say its about 2000-3000 pounds

Answer:

First it has to meet US safety and emission standards. If it doesn't, then you have to pay to bring it up to those standards.

You'll have to pay to have it sent to the port here in Japan. You'll have to pay to have it sent from the U.S. port to your house. (Picking it up yourself is an option, I think.) There's a lot of paperwork to be done so you need a freight forwarder. Ocean freight charges are going to run about $3000. I say this because it was going to be $2500 to ship a car from the U.S. to Japan about 5 years ago and with the oil increase, the price has surely gone up.
