If you want to visit the countryside, I suggest the Chugoku region, which is the southern end of the Honshu Island. The region is made up of Hiroshima, Okayama, Yamaguchi, Tottori & Shimane. Most of these prefectures are very rural. It has many temples, shrines, farms, mountains and even a desert or sand dunes in Tottori. Mt. Daisen is also in Tottori.
