It would be scary but a lot of fun if you can surround yourself with some sort of community, like a workplace (lots of Americans teach English), shared interest clubs (like international exchange coffee hours, etc) or look up friends of friends who live there. You have to be proactive about creating these social groups, too.
I would check out some blogs by foreigners living in Japan. Here are some of my favorites -- note a lot of them are tongue-in-cheek, or might even seem a little bitter, but for the most part they tell you the fun parts and the hard parts honestly:
