i started planning a visit there, im american... but i only know how to read katakana and hiragana...and i still read it like a 1st grader :p but i wanted to know if kanji is essential for touring japan? its really complicated and i cant grasp it :/

In major cities like Tokyo. Osaka, many signs are in romaji / English.
