Why does a first world nation like Japan still have public toilets you have to squat over?

What does being a first world country have anything to do with toilets ? Did you know Japan also has the highest tech toilets in the world ?
Squatter type toilets are actually more sanitary. I don't like them myself, but that's only because I grew up in the US where such things are often unknown.
