How to get the Japan Train Pass for multiple days?

Question:

For getting Japan Train pass for multiple days, do i need to get it before entering Japan?
I read this in some website.
Other than getting the "stay for sight-seeing" stamped in the passport, what else is required for buying the train pass in Japan.

Thank you
Achyuth

Answer:

You must get the JR Rail Pass outside of Japan, and then you can start using it whenever you want after arriving in Japan by changing your voucher into the pass itself. It's good for all JR trains, ferries, and JR buses, except the Nozomi shinkansen. You can't use it on other rail lines or city subways. But most cities offer a day pass for subways also for about 1000 yen.

You can't get the full pass in Japan. But there are other regional JR Passes you can get, especially good if you are only staying in one area of Japan.

See http://www.japanrailpass.net for more info.
