I hear a lot of Japanese names and objects but Aang is Chinese. Or is it supposed to be based on when the Chinese first settled in Japan (kyoshi Island haha)? I have just been wondering
Answer:
I don't think it is so much Japanese, more so chinese, and Tibetan, possibly inuit. Also, it's fiction, so isn't based on real events
