Hanko stamp registered for tourist?

Question:

ill be in japan for a month and a half and i want to send packages back home. do i need a registered hanko stamp? and can a tourist register a hanko stamp?

Answer:

You don't need a hanko to send things by mail. In fact, you don't even register a hanko stamp, except the most formal type like the "jitsuin". If you want to get once carved up for you for fun, you of course can, but you don't need to. Even when Japanese are expected to use one, foreigners are exempted from this in most cases since they are not expected to have one. Usually you just sign your name in the same space on the paper.
