Question:
They both seems to mean "to face" but is there a difference? If so, what are they?
Answer:
直面する is more passive. It just means to face or to encounter....etc.
立ち向かう is more aggressive, like to struggle against, to fight against, face up to, tackle, outbreak.... etc.
