Help translating short sentence from japanese to english?

Question:


Last sentence in 読み物 its giving me a headache:

人に何かあげる時、客に食事を出す時、自分の子供の先生に会った時、そのほかどう…


This is the part I'm having the most trouble with:

そのほかどういう時に何と言ったらよいかが決まっていて、それを覚えるのが、社会…

決まっている can be usually translated "is determined" but here in your context, it'd be more like
"決まり事があって there are rules" or "決まり文句(= 成句)があって there're usually idiomatic phrases"

I would translate;

When you hand out/give things to someone, when offering your guest meal, or when meeting your child's school teacher and so on...
there are always set phrases required depending on the situation, so learning those expressions (and applying to various occasions) is essencial to social educcation.
